Fundraisers and events are starting up, and we need a theme! Pride coordinator Radar Williams is putting out a call for theme proposals. Theme suggestions should be clear and concise, easy to read so that more people can get the message. This will be the 15th South Carolina Pride, and this will also be the year we vote on a constitutional amendment ensuring discrimination against gay and lesbian couples and families. For the past few years, Pride has maintained a consistent logo, but the Pride committee will consider a new logo; submit a logo with your theme if you want. SUBMIT YOUR THEME IDEAS BY SATURDAY, SEPT 17. Send your ideas to Radar at Blanchard.Williams@gmail.com. The SC Pride 2006 committee will meet at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept 11, at the Harriet Hancock Center. If you would like to get involved in this exciting and high energy event, join us! (CHARLESTON) HRC ORGANIZER TO SPEAK AT AFFA MEETING SEPT 13 Human Rights Campaign Field Director Bo Shuff will speak at the AFFA program meeting on Tuesday, Sept 13. “The GLBT community across the country continues to face enormous challenges in our advancement towards equality,” says Shuff, adding, “Here in the south the most important thing we can do is work to change the wind. We must talk to our friends, our co-workers, and our families … to explain to them the struggle we face and ask them for their understanding, their caring, and their voice.” For more information about AFFA events, go to www.affa-sc.org. (GREENWOOD) AIDS NON-PROFIT FINDS HOME IN GREENWOOD OPEN HOUSE SCHEDULED FOR SEPT 16 The Upper Savannah Care Consortium, which specializes in providing services for individuals infected or affected by HIV and AIDS, now has uptown Greenwood to call its new home. USCC currently serves Greenwood, Abbeville, Laurens, Edgefield, McCormick and Saluda counties. USCC provides a ranged of services related to HIV/AIDS, including free HIV testing and education through its Fighting AIDS Through Education (FATE) project. "It's important that people know that we are here not only for those that have HIV, but those that may be at risk and need further education and testing", says Williams. A group of Charleston area religious and civic organizations are inviting the public to participate in a dialogue to better understand the experiences and feelings of those diverse groups in our community who experience oppression and discrimination because of race, sexual orientation, or religious belief. A series of films have been chosen to dramatize the impact of discrimination by putting a human face on its victims. Facilitated discussion circles after each film will allow viewpoints and experiences to be shared in an atmosphere of free of judgment and criticism. Six sessions are currently planned on racial intolerance, same-sex marriage, and religious freedom. The Sept 18 screening of “Tying the Knot” will kick off the series. Light refreshments will be served. Pre-registration is encouraged and child care will be provided by prior reservation. (Contact Kathryn Manning at 843.237.1125 or at KathrynManning@sc.rr.com.) Each group covers a specific region and they go from the mountains to the sea. The network began with SCLesbians@yahoogroups.com, most of whose members and activities are in the upstate. The second group is the ColumbiaSCAreaNetwork@yahoogroups.com, focused on the general Columbia area and the Midlands. The most recent group to join is the CharlestonSocialClub@yahoogroups.com, based in the Charleston area. Each group is closed, meaning a moderator has to add new members. Each group requires new members to provide a general introduction of themselves to the group. If you or someone you know is interested, email any group for more information or to join. Organizers are Rachel-Upstate, Beth-Columbia, and Lynn and Chris-Charleston. The Charleston group has a new website at www.charlestonsocialclub.bravehost.com/. (MIDLANDS) UMOJA ORGANIZING “AWARENESS” CAMPAIGN FOR GAYS OF COLOR Palmetto Umoja, the organization for SC gays and lesbians of color, is asking the community to write the television show “Awareness” to urge for representation of gays and lesbians of color. “Awareness” airs on Sunday mornings on WIS-TV in Columbia. The show addresses issues from a minority perspective, but it rarely addresses gays and lesbians of color. The last time (and perhaps the only time) the show featured gays and lesbians was October 2004, when the show invited a gay speaker to respond to an earlier show, on which a guest made many untrue and antigay comments. Even then, there was no mention of the fact that gays and lesbians are part of the black community, though the panelists were all black and the guest gay speaker was white. An email from Umoja, urging people to write the station, says, “Gays and lesbians of color are a vital part of the South Carolina African-American community, and their voices need to be heard.” Please email the host, Craig Melvin, at cmelvin@wistv.com, and respectfully urge him to address the issues of gays and lesbians of color. Gays and lesbians of color face dual invisibility in the African-American and gay communities. Three in five black lesbian households have children. For more information, contact Umoja at PalmettoUmoja@aol.com.
